1         Institution and purpose

To celebrate the 700th anniversary of the passing of the Italian Supreme Poet Dante Alighieri which will take place in September 2021, the Ham Radio Clubs of Ravenna, Florence and Verona of Associazione Italiana Radioamatori (ARI) organize the “Diploma Dante Alighieri”.

2         Participation

Participation in the Diploma is open to all Ham Radio Operators and SWLs in the world.

3         Period of activity

For the purposes of validity of the Diploma, will be considered valid the two-way QSO or SWL reports that will take place from 00.00 CET on September 1st 2020 to 24.00 CET on September 30th 2021.

4         Frequencies and emission modes

They will be considered valid, for the purposes of this Diploma, any two-way QSO or SWL reports carried out on all band frequency assigned to amateur radio service and in any emission mode, without the aid of analog or digital repeater and in compliance with the IARU band plan.

A special Diploma for satellite, EME and passive reflections (airplane scatter, rain scatter, etc.) QSOs is foreseen.

5         Language

In the spirit of spread and knowledge of Dante Alighieri’s works, QSOs carried out in Italian are warmly encouraged.

However, the use of other languages ​​is permitted, as long as they comply with ITU regulations.

6         Dante’s places

6.1       Definition

For the purposes of the Diploma the following are considered “Dante’s Places”:

• Places related to the life of the Poet (birth, residence, death, travel)

• Places explicitly mentioned in the “Divina Commedia” or other Dante’s compositions

• Places not explicitly mentioned in the compositions, but whose identification is possible through periphrases, adjectives, etc. and that is normally accepted by Dante’s scholars.

Dante’s Places are to be considered, without further formalities, all those present in the database of the site:

www.mappingdante.com

Based on this data base, a list of Dante’s Places has been drawn up and a code consisting of two letters and two numerical digits has been assigned to uniquely identify each Place.

6.2       Categories

Dante’s Places are differentiated into the following categories:

  • Countries (Spain, Egypt, France etc.);
  • regions, historical regions (Romagna, Tuscany, Normandy, etc.);
  • provinces, historic provinces (Logudoro, Val Camonica, Marca Trevigiana etc.);
  • mountains, rivers, lakes (Monte Soratte, Acquacheta, etc.); and
  • cities and other specific places (Arezzo, Paris, etc.).

QSOs / SWL reports with / from Dante’s Places will entitle the accreditation of the following points:

  • Countries                                                                                                                        1 point
  • Regions, historical regions                                                                                         2 points
  • Provinces, historical provinces                                                                                  4 points
  • Mountains, Rivers or Lakes                                                                                        5 points
  • Cities and other specific places                                                                                 10 points

Multiple QSOs with the same station and with the same emission mode will not be considered.

The organizing radio clubs may activate special stations that will transmit from places of particular interest linked to the life of the Poet. QSOs with these special stations will give the right to accreditation of 50 points.

6.3       Accreditation of further Dante’s Places.

Possible further Dante’s Places which are not included in the lists, can be accredited by the Award Committee upon explicit request of an Activator and upon presentation of the documentation proving the status.

7         Categories

The following categories of Diplomas will be released:

  • Dante Alighieri Diploma
  • Dante Alighieri Diploma via satellite, EME and passive reflections (airplane scatter, rain scatter, etc.)

Within each category the following sub-categories are defined:

  • Hunters
  • Activators

7.1       Hunters

The “Dante Alighieri” Diploma and the “Dante Alighieri via satellite and passive reflections” Diploma for hunters will be issued to all OM / SWL who will prove to have connected / heard at least one of the following stations

  • IQ4RA station (club station of ARI section of Ravenna)
  • IQ4FI station (club station of ARI section of Firenze)
  • IQ4VO station (club station of ARI section of Verona)

and have obtained at least 500 points by connecting stations operating in Dante’s Places referred to in the previous article 6

7.2       Activators

The “Dante Alighieri” Diploma and “Dante Alighieri via satellite and passive reflections” Diploma for activators will be issued to all OM / SWL who will demonstrate that they have activated a Dante’s Place, even in non-consecutive sessions.

In order to issue the Diploma, the activation activity will be considered valid if:

  • The activation station will be within the municipality where the Dante’s Place is located or is part of it;
  • During the QSO the following information is transmitted:
    • RS Report (T);
    • Code of Dante’s Place abbreviated if in CW as “Dante XXYY” (example: “DANTE LB04” for QSO performed within in the city of Bari);
    • Code of Dante’s Place in full for the other modes as “Dante’s Place XXYY Valid for the Dante Alighieri Diploma” (example “Dante’s Place LB04 Valid for the Dante Alighieri Diploma”);
  • The QSL or eQSL to confirm the activation station must contain the following information, also in manuscript form or with stamping or adhesive labeling:

8         Issuing of Diploma

The Diploma will be issued following an application of the OM / SWL. The application shall be sent to the Organizing Committee by e-mail at the address: diploma@diplomadante.it, or uploading it in the appropriate section of the WEB site.

The application shall reach the Organizing Committee, no later than November 30, 2022. Requests received later will not be taken into consideration.

The Diploma will be sent, following the verification of the applicant’s requirements, free of charge and in PDF format to the applicant’s e-mail address.

Upon explicit request, the Diploma will be sent in A4 paper format upon payment of shipping fees.

The application shall contain:

For “Hunter” station

  • Compiled application form, complete with log extract in ADIF format of the QSOs / SWL reports performed;
  • Declaration that the QSOs have been made according to the code of ethics of the amateur radio, in compliance with the IARU bandplan and in accordance with the national laws in force;
  • Declaration of consent for personal data processing (personal data protection);
  • Proof of payment of handling and shipping costs (for the Diploma paper version only).

For “Activators” stations

  • Compiled application form complete with log extract in ADIF format of the QSOs / SWL reports performed;
  • Declaration that the QSOs have been made according to the code of ethics of the amateur radio, in compliance with the IARU bandplan and in accordance with the national laws in force;
  • Copy of the QSL or eQSL which shows what requested in point 7.2;
  • Declaration of consent for personal data processing (personal data protection);
  • Proof of payment of handling and shipping costs (for the Diploma paper version only).

The payment of the handling and shipping fees must be made following the instructions highlighted in the website www.Diplomadante.it.

9         Advancements

Advancements are foreseen every 500 points. The advancements stickers will be issued to the OM / SWL following the same instructions as per previous art. 8

10    Final rankings

At the end of the receipt of all Diploma requests, final rankings will be drawn up between the stations that have scored the highest number of points in the various categories.

The first station of each category will be awarded with special prize. The list of prizes will be published with adequate advance on the WEB site of the Diploma.

The prize delivery will take place during a special event that will be organized during the year 2022 in an Italian location to be defined.

Participation at the special event shall be at solely responsibility and charge of awarded OM/SWL

If a winner is unable to participate, the prizes, as far as technically feasible, will be sent to them at home.

In the case of shipments outside Italy, any import taxes or duties shall at winner’s solely responsibility and charges.

11    Improper behavior

To the OM / SWL that behaves differently from the Diploma rules or behaves incorrectly claiming QSOs / SWL reports, breaching the code of ethics of the radio amateur,  the IARU bandplan or the national laws in force or, in any case, in a manner different from the spirit of this rules will be withdrawn the Award, if issued, and will be banned from any further possibility to participate to this Award both as Hunter and Activator.

12    Complaints and disputes

Any complaint or dispute must be sent to the Organizing Committee via e-mail at the email address info@diplomadante.it . The Organizing Committee will feedback with its decision within 30 calendar days from complaint or dispute receipt.

The decisions of the Organizing Committee are definitive and not appealable.

13    WEB site

The website www.diplomadante.it has been created with the aim of promoting the Diploma. On the site it will be possible to find information on activations of Dante’s Places, about the released Diplomas and about the advancements. It will also be possible to send the Diploma application by uploading the required documentation.

To update the “news” section of the website, the announcement of operations from Dante’s Places is welcome, as well as the sending of photos, videos and short activation reports.

14    LOG sofwtare

A log management software program will be available for the management of the Diploma QSO.

The program, developed by IZ5HQB, can be downloaded from the www.diplomadante.it WEB site.
